How to Actually Measure Whether AI Search Is Sending You Business

The most common objection to AEO is that you cannot measure it. You can — it just requires deliberate setup, because AI referrals do not arrive labeled the way paid or organic traffic does.

    Method One: Segment AI Referrers

Traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, and Gemini arrives with identifiable referrers. Build an analytics segment for those hosts and you have a direct, growing traffic channel to report on.

Method Two: Watch Branded and Long-Tail Query Growth

When AI engines start recommending you, branded searches rise. People hear the name in an answer, then search it. A steady climb in branded impressions is one of the earliest AEO signals.

Method Three: Prompt Testing on a Schedule

Once a month, run the same ten buying-intent prompts against the major assistants and log whether you appear, how you are described, and who is named instead. It is qualitative, but the trend line is unambiguous.

Method Four: Ask at the Point of Contact

Add "how did you hear about us" to your intake form and chatbot. A rising share of "an AI recommended you" is the cleanest attribution available.

    Set a Realistic Baseline

Expect the first movement around week six and meaningful volume around month four. Reporting on it weekly creates noise, not insight.
