How to Redesign Your Website Without Losing Your Rankings
We hear the same story constantly: the new site looks great, and the phone stopped ringing. It is preventable, and the prevention happens before launch, not after.
Crawl the Old Site First
Before touching anything, export a complete list of every existing URL along with its traffic and rankings. You cannot protect what you have not inventoried.
Map Every URL to a New Destination
Every old URL needs a 301 redirect to the closest equivalent new page. Redirecting everything to the homepage is the single most damaging shortcut in web development.
Preserve the Content That Earns Rankings
Design cleanups routinely delete the long-form copy that was doing the ranking. If a page ranks, its substance moves to the new site even if the layout changes completely.
Rebuild Schema Before Launch, Not After
Structured data is almost never carried over automatically. Ship the new site with LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage schema already in place.
Keep Titles and Headings Intentional
New templates often overwrite title tags with generic patterns. Export your existing titles and descriptions and deliberately decide which change.
Launch Day Verification
Check the live robots.txt for a leftover disallow rule from staging, submit the updated sitemap, spot-check redirects, and confirm analytics and conversion tracking still fire.
